Brown Surgical Associates is proud to announce that several of the group’s surgeons who serve on the faculty of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University were promoted, effective July 1, 2023.
Trauma surgeon Sean Monaghan, MD was awarded a promotion at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University as an Associate Professor of Surgery, Research Scholar effective July 1, 2023. This senior promotion was awarded to Dr. Monaghan for his excellence in teaching and mentoring as well as his research endeavors. He is the principal investigator for an R35 funded research project on “Improving Sepsis Care with Deep RNA Sequencing.” He holds a patent for RNA Sequencing to Diagnose Sepsis and two additional provisional patents involving RNA sequencing. He has a continuous record of highly regarded publications, and has a national reputation as a surgeon-scholar, with success and innovation in his specialty.
Vascular surgeon Carla Moreira, MD was awarded a promotion at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University as an Associate Professor of Surgery, Clinician Educator effective July 1, 2023. This senior promotion was awarded to Dr. Moreira for her excellence in teaching and mentoring, clinical contributions, and disparities research. Some of Dr. Moreira’s most impactful work has been her tireless advocacy for and mentoring of the next generation of medical students and doctors, particularly those of historically underrepresented minorities. This is recognized by her receipt of the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2018 and 2022. The overlap between her clinical work, her research, and her Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work is nowhere more evident than in the SURGE Lab, of which she is the founder and principal investigator. Her research into equity in medical care, vascular surgery, and medical education is recognized nationally.
Pediatric surgeon Elizabeth Renaud, MD was awarded a promotion at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University as a Professor of Surgery, Clinician Educator effective July 1, 2023. This senior promotion was awarded to Dr. Renaud for her excellence in teaching and mentoring, clinical contributions, work in continuing education, and DEI initiatives. She has helped shape guidelines to open doors for non-traditional candidates and advocated for advancement of underrepresented minorities and women into leadership roles. In doing so, she has herself stepped up into a leadership role inspiring the next generation of surgeons. As Pediatric Trauma Medical Director, and the Surgical Director of Critical Care for Trauma at the Hasbro Children’s Hospital, she has maintained the excellence of the program while making updates to fit evolving guidelines and best practices. As Program Director for the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship Program, she has updated the program to meet evolving standards and to best support the fellow and the faculty.
Endocrine surgeon Peter Mazzaglia, MD was awarded a promotion at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University as a Professor of Surgery, Clinician Educator effective July 1, 2023. This senior promotion was awarded to Dr. Mazzaglia for his excellence in teaching and mentoring, and excellence in clinical practice. Dr. Mazzaglia’s track record of excellence in teaching, advising, and mentoring, is evident as the recipient of the Warren Alpert Medical School’s Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2011, 2015, 2016, and 2022, among other teaching awards. In addition to his clinical expertise in surgery, he is also well versed in ultrasound. He was one of the first surgeons to incorporate surgeon-performed ultrasound into his clinical practice. As a part of doing so, Dr. Mazzaglia has also helped integrate surgeon-performed ultrasound into the core curriculum for both medical students and residents.
Pediatric surgeon Carl-Christian Jackson, MD was awarded a promotion at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University as an Associate Professor of Surgery, Clinician Educator effective July 1, 2023. This senior promotion was awarded to Dr. Jackson for his excellence in clinical care, enthusiastic teaching, and mentoring. Dr. Jackson’s academic commitment and dedication to resident and medical student education has been recognized by his trainees and his peers. He was awarded the Tufts University School of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Citation in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020, 2022, and the Tufts Medical Center Resident Teaching Award in 2022. Here at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, he is already continuing his excellence in teaching and mentoring to medical students, residents, and pediatric surgery fellows.
Vascular surgeon Katherine MacCallum, MD was promoted to Assistant Professor of Surgery, Clinician Educator.
Center for Breast Care surgeon Julia Tassinari, MD was promoted to Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery.
